Sudoku puzzles were originally called "Number Place". Howard Garnes coined this term as the creator of this puzzle. It was published first by Dell Magazines. Nikoli introduced in Japan in the paper Monthly Nikolist in 1984. It was called at first "Suji wa dokushin ni kagiru" meaning "the numbers must occur only once".
